Here is my woodcarving. I have been working on Mickey. I'm trying to figure out how to make him look right. I will post again when I am finished.

I was looking for cool sculptures through out the Oklahoma area. I really like this. It is from a guy in Gage Okahoma named Denny Mingus. He has several and they are awesome. It would not let me post the site, my computer is bi-polar but I would just use the key words of his name and the town. I would love to get my family out and build something like this on our land.

Yay! My computer, my camera and I are finally friends!! I got a late start on the blog but now I am ready...

The first image (on the left) is my drawing of my dragon and a bit of carving, it was taken a week ago and sorry it is not a great pic...like I said the camera was not cooperating. The second image (on the right) is with progress and after today I will post more progress.

Here is my wood carving so far. I am almost finished with Minnie. I still have alot to do but I really like this so far.

Magdalena Abakanowicz

A friend of mine recently told me about her favorite artist, Magdalena Abakanowicz. She wanted me to look at her art because she knew I was interested in larger figures. Being a weaver, I have worked with natural fibers for many years. My friend thought the combination of the figures and natural materials would spark my interest in Magdalena. I find her work extraodinary. I'm getting ready to do an artist profile on her but I wanted to post this video below to introduce her to the other students. I think you will be moved by her work.

I've never heard of this guy until today.  Carved styrofoam sculpture.

Who is the sculptor?

This is, I think, a mother and her two children, holding hands. It is my mother's, made out of dark wood. I've always liked it, but I do not know who made it.

Still a work in progress! When I eventually get the baby completed, I'm going to use sandpaper on the body to smooth out the tool marking's.

This is on Route 66 on the west side of Stroud. It's not a very good picture but there is an UFO with an alien sitting on it and a few people standing around the yard.

So this is in between Seminole and Prague, on my way to school.

Week 2 of my project. Coming along nicely I think lol.

High relief carving...so far! I have a little deeper to go for the background and then get to start on the stoplight

This is my first picture of my piece. I have to say that I absolutely love the tool that takes away a bunch of the wood because it saved me a whole lot of time today and I made a lot of progress. I am almost done with the background and am going to work on it over the weekend in order to meet the week-away deadline. Sorry about the bad quality of my phone camera.

I finally figured out how to use this thing so I have some catching up to do as far as the weekly blogging goes. Here's a first look at my first project for Sculpture As An Avocation. Hopefully you can see it well enough.

Clear polyurethane

I will buy some of that clear Minwax stuff that the guy used on the video.  Everyone can use it.

I've drawn my image of a fetus and will get started on it in class tomorrow. It's slowly coming to life.

Sculpture I critique

Your high reliefs need to be completed by the end of class Thursday, Sept. 1st.  And of course, class ends at 3:50 p.m. every day.  Please take a few photos for your portfolios and also post them to the blog. 

This first critique will take place on the blog.  Please make contructive, thoughtful comments on everyone's work.  You could ask questions like.

Why did you choose that subject matter?  Are you trying to convey something to the viewer?  raise questions?  express a feeling?  or an idea?

How much time did you spend working on the relief?

What changes would you make to your piece to make it stronger?

Which piece in the class do you think is the strongest?

Do you have any new ideas that have been a result of this project?

Part of your grade for the High Relief will come from your participation in this web critique.  It's important to understand that, while some questions might appear pointed, comments made about your work should not be taken personally.  Getting upset defeats the purpose of having a crit. 

I was checking out different sculptures online and came across this one. It isn't from anyone on our list. The artist incorporated materials that are thrown out in the trash, such as plastic utensils, metals and toys. What intrigued me about this work is the illusion of movement.
