This is what I worked on today. No real idea behind it, but just balance. It's kind of odd I know, but I'm having fun experimenting with this project.
This is looking really great! Now you need to think about contrast. I think you should consider staining the base with an ebony stain to make it look different because it is different. It's not really a part of the composition. The only reason it's there is because it has to be to hold the sculpture up. Keep playing around with this.

The contrasting shapes are arranged really nice.
